The Dodgy Album is an infectious debut that gets by as much on attitude as tunes. Although there are a handful of ringers, most of the record is driven by punchy power chords and sing-along choruses that are reminiscent of the Who at their peak. It's a fun and exciting debut. C'est un permier opus fun et excitant. Whatever underhanded, double-dealing activity their name might imply, the London-based trio are plainly not out to short change anybody with their debut album. Produced by The Lightning Seeds Ian Broudie, this is perky guitar pop of the highest order that revels in its Englishness and rich '60s pickings without succumbing to the lure of simple pastiche. In a kinder climate both Lovebirds and the Who-some Water Under The Bridge would have got them nicely off the mark. As it is, they'll probably have to dig in for a long slog while the rest of the world catches up their unfashionable but infectious chirpinesss. But while bassist Nigel Clark can keep coming up with the hooks and harmonies as potent as I Need Another, Stand By Yourself and Never Again they should have no worries. The next medium-sized thing? Mais tant que le bassiste Nigel Clark pourra pondre des refrains et des harmonies aussi puissantes que I Need Another, Stand By Yourself et Never Again, ils ne devraient avoir aucune inquiétude à se faire.
