1993 Welcome To The Cruel World
"Welcome To The Cruel World"

A dreadlocked 24-year-old Californian, Ben Harper must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. His debut album is a hugely impressive example of modern acoustic folk blues, a mix that might easily be unique. Backed for the most part by just bass, drums and his own vehemently non-amplified guitar, the quality and texture of the end result makes a mockery of the simplicity of the tools used. His songwriting, too, is equally without frills, opting instead for a winning emotional directness. Pleasure And Pain, Walk Away, Waiting On An Angel and the title track itself are all fine variations of this stripped down approach, while Chris Darrow's rolling Whipping Boy and unashamedly idealistic I'll Rise, with words by Maya Angelou, add both strength and depth to his cause. A natural talent and a quite lovely record.
